A Seventeenth Century Gold Posy Ring

English, c.1675


comprising of buttery yellow gold band of 6mm thickness, the interior inscribed ‘Be trv in harte.’

Stamped with a maker’s mark of an H within a shield.

This inscription and close variations are recorded on page 26 of ‘English Posies and Posy Rings‘ by Dame Joan Evans (London, 1931).



This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist in Awre, Gloucestershire in 2021. It is recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) as GLO-44FA36 and was deemed treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. It was examined under Treasure Case 2021T445 and subsequently returned to the finder.
