the tapering square cut blue sapphire mounted in an inverted pyramidal yellow gold bezel to a gold shank.
English, 13th to 14th Century.
Gemstones were traded along the silk and spice routes from the Orient to the West during the medieval period. This sapphire is of Basaltic form and is likely to have originated in South East Asia.
