A Hardstone Cameo of Cupid mounted in a ring
1st Century BCE
carved in sardonyx, a right facing profile with curly hair and pointed features.
The cameo is a fragment of a larger gem which was probably reshaped into a circle during the 18th Century so that it might be mounted into this gold finger ring. A small section of agate and shellac has been added to the base of the gem, where a section of the neck was missing.
The youthful and somewhat mischievous face which might possibly depict the god Cupid.
