A Gold and Micromosaic Brooch by Castellani

Rome, c.1880

decorated with intricate micromosaic, centered with an equilateral cross in twisted gold wire, surrounded by a band of white and red glass tesserae, each side flanked by overlapping rows of squares, comprising of red, yellow and blue tesserae on a turquoise green background, edged with yellow gold twisted wire, the pattern repeated in engraved gold on the reverse.

Signed with intertwined C’s for Castellani.

A closely comparable jewel can be found in the collection of jewels left by Alfredo Castellani to the Museo Nazionale Etrusco housed in the Villa Giulia in Rome.
