The drops are highly redolent of the work of Cartier circa 1905 and fall into the Garland style, characterised by stylised foliate motifs in the Louis XVI taste. They are closely comparable to the jewels created by the workshops of Lavabre and Saibène for Cartier during the turn of the century and likely originated from a lavallière necklace. It was common for the drops of a lavallière necklace to be detachable, so they could be worn in other forms including earrings. See pg 76 of ‘Cartier 1900-1939’ (Rudoe, 1997) for a lavallière necklace with detachable drops.
