A gold mounted hardstone cameo pendant
Italian, circa 1750
in the form of a yellow gold disk with a border of rose cut diamonds, with four circular cut blue sapphires in raised collets, centred by a beautiful plique-à-jour enamel pansy flower with purple and yellow petals and tendrilous green stem.
Length: 3.5cm
The pansy flower, translating as ‘pensée’ in French, is a rebus for the word ‘pense’ (to think). The jewel serves as a reminder to the recipient to think of the person from whom the brooch was given, ‘pense à moi’.
